Congratulations to nearly a 100 new IM Alumni

Nearly 100 new IM graduates received their Bachelor diplomas at graduation ceremonies over the past two weekends – this includes nearly 40 “pioneers” who studied at Campus Brugg in either full- or part-time mode.

In Olten the Graduation Ceremony took place on 6 October.  Due to ever-increasing numbers of students studying in English, there is now a ceremony exclusively for those graduating from BSc and MSc English-taught programmes.  Our own IM Alumni Graduation Prize was also awarded – this year’s winner is Umberto Verde who was praised by classmates for initiating many good ideas, being the class rep and “he has invested a lot of his free time for his fellow students and he was always there when you needed help with something. He is a great guy and more than deserves this award.”

In total the graduating classes nominated 10 classmates who they felt deserved the CHF400 prize for contributing to the IM community.  Nominees were: Carolyn Höchle, Tobias Dolenzky, Theo Whitwill, Timo Dätwyler, Leonora Asani, Corinne Köpfli, David Balsiger, Delia Moser, Geoffrey Bauer and Umberto Verde.  The prize money is raised at the Bid for a Boss event.

In Brugg, the ceremony was held on 30 September and  IM graduate Steven Rowntree received the Graduate of the Year prize of CHF 1500.  This was the “pioneering” batch of IM students who began their studies in 2014.

Photos of both ceremonies will soon be available here

Funds transferred to Catalyst4Change

Lighting up Faces. A group of young pupils get their first peek at the world of computers and the internet. Thanks to John Uwaeke’s two step charity, children in rural Nigeria receive basic training and some of these receive further support to become a trainer themselves. The charity Catalyst4Change also supplies laptops. Want to know more?

CHF 2000 was transferred to Catalyst4Change this week. IM alumnus John Uwaeke’s charity aims to significantly improve opportunities for children in rural Nigeria by supplying laptops and training in basic IT*.  The IM Alumni Association held a charity auction, Bid for a Boss, in April to support this initiative.

Just over CHF 3000 was raised at the auction where 15 bosses offered an amazing range of opportunities. (We’ll keep reporting on those redeemed bids.)

The remainder of the funds will cover other association events and the IM Alumni Graduation Prize which recognizes the social contributions to the IM community.  IM bachelor students in their 3rd year are currently nominating fellow students who have helped their class, students or the school over the years. The prize is announced and awarded at Graduation (which will be on 6 October this year).

  • If you missed out on the event but want to donate to this good cause you can deposit money in account number 40-000061-4, Basler Kantonalbank, 4002 Basel.  IBAN CH11 0077 0253 5963 8200 1 770.  Aternatively, if you have laptops still in good working order and are willing to donate these, contact John directly.

A new batch of  49 IM graduates received their diplomas today.  And our IM Alumni Graduation Prize was also awarded – for the first time there was a tie.  Manuel Frei was praised especially for independently organising a brilliant study trip to Poland for his fellow students.  And Lawrence Morillo for his constant support of his classmates with organising study groups and study materials for classmates and helping the exchange students.

The IM Alumni Graduation Prize is awarded each year to whoever the graduating classmates think has contributed most to the IM community.  Indicative of the fundamental spirit of IM, there were a dozen nominations: Also nominated this year were: Valentina Heiz, Dominic Lohberger, Mitja Messerli, Nicolas Perrin, Yves Sutter, Joel Vogt, Rigzin-Chodon Dotschung, Tanja Nann and Selina Widmer. (A large number of students voted for Haris Besic even though he was not on the nominations list because he decided to extend his studies so he was saluted to general applause yesterday.) The prize money (CHF 400) is raised at IM Alumni events and was handed over yesterday by the president of the IM Alumni Association, Esin Cengiz.

Our congratulations to all the new graduates.  We hope to see you soon.

p.s. As soon as the professional photos are out, we’ll post them here.

Nearly 50 new IM graduates joined the alumni ranks on Friday 2 October at the official FHNW School of Business Graduation Ceremony in Olten.

IM Alumni instigated a Graduation Prize three years ago to acknowledge the importance of social contributions.  During those years of studying, the learning community profits greatly from those who contribute by being class representatives, acting as buddies for exchange students, organising student events, lending a helping hand.  So in summer we always ask the graduating students to nominate and vote for those students they feel have contributed most.  This year the winner was Lia Flück: classmates praised her for  “her positive and determined mindset”, for being very “sociable” and always being helpful. Lia received a cash prize of CHF 400 – funds which are raised during IM Alumni events.

There were in all, this year, 10 nominations which reflects how many IM’s go the extra mile: The full list of nominations were – Alacam Mansur, Lea Arago, Lia Flück, Daniela Flühler, Ladina Flury, Tanja Kühni, Anna Katharina Rieder, Katrin Steiner, David Stutz, Ruben Zwahlen.

Congratulations to all graduates: we sincerely wish you happiness and success in the next life phase and very much hope you stay in touch with the IM Alumni.

The IM Alumni Graduation Prize was also announced:  Chantal Bucher was voted the person who contributed most to the class communities over the past three years.  Her fellow students commended her for her indefatigable friendship, support and help – constantly promoting the community spirit.

IM Graduation and Prizes 2013

Congratulations to the brand new IM alumni! At the end of September another 32 joined our proud ranks. We wish you success and joy in this new stage of life.

IM Class 2013 - 3.32

IM Class 2013 – 3.31

IM Class 2013 - 1.32

IM Class 2013 – 3.32

For the first time ever, IM Alumni presented a graduation prize at the Graduation Ceremony on 26 September.  As our key goals are networking and giving back, the prize reflected this.  All year 3 IM students were asked to nominate one person from among their own year  who “contributed most to the IM community” and to give their reason.  There was an overwhelming response and 8 individuals received nominations for being class representatives,  or serving on the Student Council, being a buddy to exchange students, being generally helpful with photocopying or support, organising events.  The list was long and heartwarming.  As dean Prof Antje Leukens said in her speech at the ceremony, the readiness to contribute and help is a key characteristic of IM students.

There was a clear winner – who received over 40% of the votes:  Özlem Kösker.  Some of the praises sung for her included “she was always very engaged in integrating the exchange students and organizing events/parties etc. She’s a very open-minded person and talked to everyone, no matter whether local student or from abroad. ” “As a Students Council member she really did an additional work and contributed to a better environment for all of us (guaranteed the exchange between visitings and locals). Furthermore, she also stayed at the students house (Franziskushaus) even when the event was already finished and helped cleaning up everything (while the others where already partying at the Terminus). I’ll give her my vote because she really deserves it!” and “indefatigable commitment for the community, both in-class and students council, where she put a lot of effort into the buddy system for incoming students.”

The prize of CHF 400 (which comes from fundraising events conducted by IM Alumni) was presented to Özlem by president of the board, Esin Cengiz (and handed over with a very big hug instead of a handshake as Özlem has also been helping the IM Alumni the last year in liaising with current students – so she was, as Esin said, even “one of us”).

Graduation

There will be a fresh batch of IM Alumni on Thursday 26 September.  The graduation ceremony, for all all School of Business students, will be held in the Stadtheater in Olten and the IM Alumni Board will be there too as this year, for the first time, we’ll be awarding a prize for the IM student who contributed most to the IM Community.

The students themselves could nominate and select candidates for this prize and it is in line with our statutes where we wish to promote the “giving back” aspect of an international and multi-cultural education.  We’ll upload the photos and who receives the prize after the ceremony.  The prize itself, of course, is funded by you via the proceeds of events.
